Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office to host youth academy

The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office is bringing its Youth Leadership Academy to Franklin this summer as part of a pilot to expand the program throughout Norfolk County.
From Aug. 16 to 20, Norfolk County youth between the ages of 10 and 14 can participate in a week of adventure activities designed to build self-confidence, leadership, communication and goal-setting. The sheriff’s office currently runs a Youth Leadership Academy in Braintree.
“Giving children the opportunity to build self-confidence and challenge themselves in a safe environment is important in helping them develop the skills to succeed in adulthood,” said Norfolk County Sheriff Patrick McDermott. “Our youth academy in Braintree has been proof of that, and I am glad to be able to extend this opportunity to families across Norfolk County with this pilot program in Franklin.”

It has been a long year for all of us, including the Northland Foundation s Youth Leadership Academy.
The academy is composed of Northland ninth-grade students who were nominated by teachers the previous year because of their leadership potential.
My daughter was one of the participants. We have her welcome letter dated May 28, 2019, long before we knew what this year would bring. Orientation was in September 2019, and the kids met every month with foundation staff members, volunteer mentors from the business community and guest speakers. They learned interpersonal skills, communication, leadership and community service. They identified the causes they care about and discussed how they could help with a year-end service p
