Caregiver alcohol abuse can mean long-term stress on kids 2 hours ago Research on children in welfare system could help guide practitioners Children raised by caregivers who struggle with alcohol-use problems are more likely to deal with the symptoms of post-traumatic stress for longer periods of time, according to a new study from the University of Georgia. A team led by Orion Mowbray from the UGA School of Social Work relied on data compiled by the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect. This expansive study followed children who had entered the child welfare system at the age of 8 through the age of 16, checking in at four-year intervals.

Margaret Lombe, PhD, is an Associate Professor at Boston College School of Social Work and Assistant Dean for the Doctoral Program. She is also a faculty associate at the Center for Social Development at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Lombe s area of expertise is international social development with an emphasis on social inclusion/exclusion and capacity building. She also specializes in methods for food security and nutrition assessment and evaluation of programs both locally and internationally. She uses an interdisciplinary research approach to examine poverty, food security, and livelihoods. Dr. Lombe has conducted evaluations for Non-Governmental Organizations including Catholic Relief Services, Entreculturas, OXFAM America & OXFAM Great Britain, Global Ignatian Advocacy Networks (GIAN), and the Association of Member Episcopal Conference of Eastern Africa (AMECEA). In the Child Welfare System, Black Families Should Matter

Editor’s Note This is Part One of a two-part series that came out of the “Our Kids” reporting project. Our Kids is a project of the reporting collaborative, which examines the challenges and opportunities facing Philadelphia’s foster care system. So, why Philadelphia? While we generally report mostly only on issues in Los Angeles and around California, this two part series which originally ran in NEXT CITY skillfully points beyond itself to the destructive and disproportionate treatment that too many Black families, Indigenous families, and Latinx families all over the nation, including in California  and, yes, in Los Angeles   are experiencing when they come in contact with the child welfare system.
