Praising the crimes of Stalinism: The DSA and the assassination of Leon Trotsky
During the past week, numerous prominent leaders of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have posted tweets celebrating the 1940 assassination of Leon Trotsky and portraying the murderer, the Stalinist GPU agent Ramon Mercader, as a hero.
Many of the tweets by DSA leaders are illustrated with photos and memes of an alpenstock, the weapon used by Mercader to murder Trotsky. Nickan Fayyazi, a member of the National Coordinating Committee of the Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA), presents one such photo with the caption “this might come in handy today.”

A march demanding distribution of $900 checks to the UC Santa Barbara student body was held on the afternoon of May 8, organized by the Young Democratic Socialists of America, a UC Santa Barbara student organization. The protesters began marching from the Storke Tower to Chancellor Yangâs residence in the southeastern corner of campus at around 2:30 p.m., weaving banners and chanting slogans along the way. As the crowd arrived at Yangâs house, several speakers expressed their frustrations over the lack of university-provided support for students during the pandemic. The protest ended with the protestors chalking the driveway to the residence with slogans such as, âPower to the Studentsâ and â$900 now.â

âThe bureaucracy is a circle from which no one can escape.â â Karl Marx
If youâve managed to make it through your time at UC Santa Barbara without ever having to delve deep into the enigmatic world of its administration or communicate with the distinguished and venerable aristocracy, then consider yourself lucky. It is not an experience I would recommend.Â
After many tedious hours digging through university records, researching public law and emailing unresponsive and irritable bureaucrats, the Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) at UCSB discovered something that you probably could have guessed without putting yourself through any of the administrative bullshit.Â
