More space for EFS higher participants More applicants will be allowed on to the latest tranche of the Environmental Farming Scheme higher level, DAERA has confirmed. Last year, less than a quarter of the 966 applicants in the fourth tranche of the scheme received agreement offers. “Due to the demand in previous years, DAERA intends to increase the number of agreements it issues this year. For those farmers who were unsuccessful with previous applications, it may be worth trying again this year,” states new guidance from DAERA. EFS higher level is for land in environmentally designated areas and applications for the fifth tranche of the scheme close on 21 May.

Sign Up A group of next generation judges has been unveiled for the beef classes at next month’s Royal Highland Showcase. The Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland (RHASS), which is organising the live-streamed event, has announced a 13-strong judging panel of cattle enthusiasts for the showcase. It said all the beef judges for the showcase – which takes place on June 14-20 in place of the Royal Highland Show, which cannot be staged in its normal format due to Covid-19 restrictions – have all either come through the Scottish Association of Young Farmers’ Clubs stockjudging programme or are young breeders from previous shows

Campaign encourages farmers to open up on mental health >More in © Adobe Stock The Farming Community Network (FCN) is asking farmers if they really are “as tough as old boots”, as part of a new initiative to encourage rural workers to talk about their mental health. Posters created by the charity ask the question, before suggesting some of the ways farmers might put on a brave face and avoid talking about difficult topics such as suicide, bereavement, loneliness and feeling overwhelmed. The campaign has been launched at the start of Mental Health Awareness Week (10-16 May). The charity hopes people will share the poster with local GP surgeries, veterinary clinics, village halls and more to help let those living and working in rural and farming communities know that help is available.
