Welch predicts House passage of bill creating 21-member elected school board in Chicago

Justin L. Fowler/The State Journal-Register, distributed by the Associated Press Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch said Thursday he believes in “more democracy not less” and the state Senate delivered just that by passing a bill to create a 21-member elected school board in Chicago. One day after Mayor Lori Lightfoot denounced the bill as having “nothing to do with democracy,” Welch argued just the opposite. He called the Senate bill “a pretty good compromise” and said the House is likely to pass it without the makeover the mayor has demanded. If anything, Welch said he would have preferred a speedier timetable than waiting until November 2024 to seat half the new board members and November 2026 to elect the other half.

Capitol Fax com - Your Illinois News Radar » Could the session-long media coverage theme finally be shifting?

The Sun-Times wants us to blame an elected school board law, before the elected school board is actually seated? If you want to blame someone for the elected school board, don’t blame Harmon and Martwick, blame The Mayor and the mayors before her. They’ve had 25 years to prove to parents that mayoral control was a better model, and they failed. When I was younger, it didn’t take me long to figure out that the guys who were always calling their long string of ex’s crazy, were instead the crazy ones themselves. Someone should try to explain this concept to the ILGOP. At this point they are embarrassing themselves with this constant blame shifting to whoever sits in the speakers chair.

Welch s first session as speaker: Democrats see success, Republicans more of the same

Welch and the super-majority he now leads passed a bevy of bills during the first legislative session with Welch at the helm. Democrats say he did it with a "refreshing" collaborative approach. But Republicans say, for them the new boss is the same as the old boss.
