The McHenry County Board voted Tuesday night to keep a federal contract that allows the local jail to house immigrants facing deportation.
The vote 15 to 8 came after more than two hours of heated public comments. The resolution had called for county officials to begin ending its agreement with the federal government by Nov. 1, 2021, citing a loss of revenue in 2020 and for the first quarter of fiscal year 2021.

Deportations and Arrests of Immigrants in the U.S. Illegally Fall Sharply Under Biden © paul ratje/Reuters
WASHINGTON Federal immigration authorities have made sharply fewer arrests and deportations of immigrants in the country illegally since President Biden took office, as the new administration reorients enforcement within the U.S. to focus on those with a serious criminal record.
Mr. Biden made a 100-day deportation moratorium one of his key campaign promises, meant to demonstrate his commitment to overhauling U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the agency charged with immigrant arrests, detention and deportations.
A federal judge halted that deportation pause days after it was issued in January, but ICE statistics show that enforcement priorities the administration introduced have sharply reduced most of the agency’s activity anyway.

USCIS recently announced that the Form I-944, Declaration of Self-Sufficiency and any information and documentation required as part of the form are no longer required in response to a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision not to review the 7th Circuit case of
Cook County, Illinois and Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights v. Wolf. This led to the dismissal of the case on March 9th and ultimately USCIS’ rescission of the previously required I-944 form.
Note that several USCIS forms, including the I-129 and I-485 forms still have language on the form that was changed due to the Public Charge requirement so USCIS has indicated that in the meantime no applications will be rejected for leaving these sections blank.
