Celebrating spring while fighting a war

The new life of spring is all around us during the month of May. The trees and meadows are greening in with gleeful abandon. The warmer temperatures goad perennial plants into awakening from their winter slumber. Seeds dropped by last year’s annuals are germinating.
Appreciating the beauty of this season isn’t particularly challenging for one who enjoys some degree of safety and comfort. But can a person who is far removed from his loved ones and fighting a war even be cognizant of spring? I recently read the journal of a Civil War soldier that proved to me it’s indeed possible.
