The Illinois car dealer lawsuit against electric automaker Rivian is the latest chapter in a nationwide debate over the options consumers have to buy cars.
Many states, including Illinois, have laws to restrict new car sales to independent dealers. University of Michigan law professor Daniel Crane said those are a product of the days the Big Three manufacturers Ford, General Motors and Chrysler dominated car sales, as opposed to the variety of automakers that exist now.
“They had disproportionate bargaining power vis-a-vis their franchise dealers, said Crane. You had just the Big Three, dealers were mostly mom and pop organizations, and the argument that dealers made was that the Big Three were taking unfair advantage of them.”

Ford’s new EV organization will provide a “one-stop ‘Everything Online’ experience which includes service appointments, pickup and delivery of cars,” the company has confirmed.
While the Ford Mustang Mach-E is already on sale in various markets and has started to reach the hands of customers, models sold in China will actually be built in China and evidently, the car manufacturer believes the most efficient way to get them to consumers is through a similar direct sales model as used by Tesla for many years.
Of course, Tesla and Ford’s new EV organization in China aren’t the only automakers with such a sales model. Electric vehicle startups Rivian and Lucid Motors have also announced plans to sell their forthcoming models directly to consumers in the United States, although this plan has come under fire by the Illinois Automobile Dealers Association.

SPRINGFIELD â Republicans in the General Assembly have introduced a new bill that would hand over the process of drawing new legislative and congressional district maps to an independent commission that would be required to use official Census Bureau, rather than survey estimates, to draw the maps.
The latest bill, introduced Tuesday as an amendment to Senate Bill 1325, mirrors a proposed constitutional amendment that was introduced in 2019. That proposal, which had 37 cosponsors, died in the 101st General Assembly without receiving a hearing.
Every 10 years, states redraw their legislative and congressional district maps to align with the most recent decennial census. That process is being complicated this year, as the census data needed to complete those tasks has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors.
