MONROVIA – The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) has certified all documents required for the offloading of a ship currently waiting at the Free Port of Monrovia to offload frozen foods, which is gradually becoming scarce on the local market, but the importer’s inability to obtain an Import Permit Declaration (IPD) from the Ministry of Commerce remains the hindrance.
Over the last few months, local and foreign owned businesses have complained over the refusal of the Ministry of Commerce to issue IPD for the importation of frozen foods.
APM Terminals holds the concession to operate the Free Port of Monrovia for 25 years.
Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe has issued a strong warning about the current behavior of the global ports operating company, the APM Terminals, that if nothing is done about that company, it could bring this government down.
âThat company, Protemp, if nothing is done about APM, I donât want to go that way, but it could bring this government down; thatâs how dangerous it is; and to the extent where the House of Representatives sponsored a study tour to Ghana to compare what APM is doing in Ghana, it is day versus night. The benefits, the way people are treated in Ghana compared to whatâs happening here, itâs the worst decision we ever made in this Legislature,â said Senator Snowe.

FROM BAD LABOR practices to allegations of overcharging Liberian businesses, APM Terminal has been in the news of late, for all the wrong reasons.
IN OCTOBER 2010, APM signed a 25‐year concession agreement for the operation of the Port of Monrovia in Liberia after it was named the preferred bidder for the port management and modernization project.
THE AGREEMENT for the port’s privatization resulted in the investment of $120 million USD in the facility over the course of the contract term.
