Playboys and fallen women: the wild aristocrats who inspired The Pursuit of Love
Nancy Mitford s novel, freshly adapted for the BBC, drew heavily on her social circle – and in particular her own eccentric family

When it comes to novel The Pursuit of Love – a new adaptation of which began on BBC One last night, written and directed by Emily Mortimer – the description that springs to mind is “larger than life”. Ironic, then, that Nancy Mitford’s famous tragicomic satire of English aristocracy in the run-up to the Second World War was in fact drawn closely from reality. Her dazzling and deranged characters are loosely disguised portraits of the blue-blooded circles in which she and her infamous sisters mixed.
IN 1957, the passing out parade for the Highland Light Infantry at Maryhill Barracks was an impressive affair. As the Colonel inspected the recruits, none of them could have guessed within a few short years the regiment would be amalgamated with another and the famous barracks themselves would be demolished and the land turned over to housing. The barracks were built in the 1870s, and they became a focal point for the community. The Solder’s Hotel was a favourite among the troops and later became the Maryhill Trades Union Centre. The HLI Bar at the corner of Maryhill Road and Kelvinside Avenue, was popular as was the Elephant and Bugle.

An 18th century property nestled in the village where Winston Churchill planned the D-Day Normandy landings along with other world leaders could be yours for just over £3M.
This stunning country residence, named Waterside and located in Droxford, Hampshire, has a rich history which dates back to 1714, when it was built during the Georgian period.
Previous custodians of the property include 19th century Royal Navy Admiral Admiral Henry Keppel and a former aide to Cecil Rhodes - who was the Prime Minister of the Cape Colony in South Africa in 1890.
The current owners have also discovered tunnels underneath the property that were used to keep stable hands out of sight from the house and grounds.
The new BBC drama, The Pursuit of Love THE Mitford Sisters are back in the news with the announcement that an adaptation of Nancy Mitford s 1945 novel The Pursuit of Love, starring Lily James, Dominic West and Andrew Scott, is to be the new BBC drama on Sunday night in the spot vacated by Line of Duty.
The Pursuit of Love? Are there any cops in it? Not this time. Set in Europe between the wars and closely modelled on Nancy Mitford s own life, it s the story of Linda Radlett, the most beautiful daughter of an eccentric aristocratic English family led by a domineering racist misogynist (played in the TV adaptation by West). Linda goes in pursuit of the perfect husband before falling for a French duke. Mitford herself had a relationship with Gaton Palewski, a Free French commander and politician.
