Attorney general: It’s tax season; beware of scams [The Albany Herald, Ga.]
Feb. 4 ATLANTA With tax season approaching, Attorney General Chris Carr is encouraging Georgia taxpayers to protect themselves from tax-related scams and tax identity theft.
“As Georgians prepare to file their taxes this year, we are offering a few tips and warnings to protect them from con artists who may try to swindle Georgia taxpayers out of their hard-earned money,” Attorney General Chris Carr said.
“The Department of Revenue continuously adapts our fraud management system to catch tax identity theft and tax fraud once returns are filed,” Revenue Commissioner David Curry said. “However, I would like to strongly encourage taxpayers to help combat this problem by learning how to protect their information and by doing their due diligence to ensure they are entrusting their confidential taxpayer information to a reputable tax professional.”

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -The Charlottesville Commissioner of the Revenue is partnering with the IRS and Free File Alliance member companies to offer free federal and state income tax online filing services to qualified city taxpayers.
The online tax prep providers include TurboTax, OnLine Taxes (OLT), and TaxACT.
“The free file program has been around for quite a while. It’s something that the IRS started a number of years ago, you know, really to try to encourage people to file online and to provide these these resources for free as a way to do it,” Charlottesville Commissioner of the Revenue Todd Divers said.
And, those who were eligible for economic impact payments and either didn t get one or got the wrong amount will have to claim them as a refundable credit on their taxes this year – even if they usually do not file.
There are underused services that can help people this tax season, said Tania Brown, a certified financial planner and financial coach at SaverLife, a nonprofit focused on financial security. There are free options, they do not necessarily have to pay to get their taxes done, she said.
