The Edmonton Oilers remain some distance away from mathematically clinching a playoff spot, what with the Vancouver Canucks still having enough games to catch up that in theory they could still finish in
first place in the North. We all know that isn’t going to happen, but some of those games have to be played before it becomes a mathematical certainty, likely some time next week when the Oilers meet the Canucks four times in a six-day span. They’ll first have a chance to put an insurmountable difference between themselves and Calgary Flames with a win in either of the two games the Alberta rivals will play later this week.
As
Leon Draisaitl quite appropriately put it, there is no “X” beside Edmonton in the standings just yet. But we’re still seeing signs of post-season preparation. And I expect one more notable result of that prep to come and soon.
That and more in this week’s edition of…
9 Things
9. I’d love to see the Jets and Oilers in the 1
st Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. These 2 never seem to disappoint. Even though the Oilers won the season series 5-2 all 7 tilts were entertaining. I enjoy watching the Jets and have respect for them. And besides, doesn’t Edmonton’s road to the cup always go through Winnipeg?

Damon Severson Has Been an Unsung Hero

The other day, CJ wrote a piece about how PK Subban has really been struggling for the New Jersey Devils. It is a relevant and telling article about a guy making $9 million a year through 2022. He is a likeable guy and someone you want to root for, but in terms of on-ice production for the team, he has not been overly helpful.
The antithesis to him, in many ways, has undoubtedly been Damon Severson, someone making $4.17 million, less than half of Subban. Whereas PK gets a lot of press coverage and is highlighted often, Severson always seems to just fly under the radar, and he is just sort of expected to be a solid contributor on the blueline. And that he has been this season, at the absolute minimum. Damon Severson has had a very solid season so far for the Devils, and is someone they have been able to count on in the back end, especially at even strength.
