Signing Pavel Buchnevich Long Term Should Be Top Priority for New York Rangers

Signing Pavel Buchnevich Long Term Should Be Top Priority for New York Rangers Share this story Photo by Jared Silber/NHLI via Getty Images Of the New York Rangers who need a new contract, whether they be a free agent or someone entering the final year of their contract, Pavel Buchnevich should be at the top of the list for President and General Manager Chris Drury. Truthfully he’s No. 1 or No. 2 depending on how realistic you feel it is that Adam Fox will sign a long-term extension based off two seasons when it may be advantageous for him to push for a short deal and then cash in. A new deal for Igor Shesterkin shouldn’t be hard either, as the team can draw on history. Henrik Lundqvist had a two-year ELC, signed a one-year deal at $4.25 million (8.45% of the cap), and then ultimately signed a six-year deal upon expiry. That seems like a fair template to use. Outside of that, Buchnevich is the main priority. And yes, signing Buchnevich to a new deal is more important than si

Seattle Expansion Draft Series: Article 10 - Los Angeles and Minnesota

Seattle Expansion Draft Series: Article 10 - Los Angeles and Minnesota Minnesota section by Matt Smith Share this story Welcome back to our Seattle Expansion Draft Series. If you haven’t read the first article that lays out the rules of the expansion draft, that would be a good starting point, as I’ll only give the very basic rules in each of these follow up articles. If you are interested in Detroit, that was the I’m going to take a look at either one or two other NHL teams each week. My goal is to get some input from people who cover the team because let’s face it, I don’t have the knowledge of each NHL team to be able to give you the best idea of what to expect. Keep in mind that there’s a lot that could happen between now and July, when the lists are finalized. So let’s dive into L.A. and Minnesota!

When Value Metrics Disagree: The Murray-Severson Paradox and Assessing the Devils Defenders

When Value Metrics Disagree: The Murray-Severson Paradox and Assessing the Devils Defenders Share this story Has Ryan Murray been good this season? It’s okay, take your time to answer. I had no idea when I started writing this piece, which is why I asked Twitter. To my eye, he started the season rough, getting exposed on the top pairing with Subban and the first penalty-killing unit. Lately, I haven’t really noticed him. For a defensive defenceman like Murray, that’s normally good news. Has Damon Severson been good this season? I feel like this answer was a bit easier for me. The short answer is “Yes.” Ty Smith was floundering with aspiring AHLer, Matt Tennyson, to start the season and then he looked like a true future stud alongside Damon. Ryan Murray’s improvement has also coincided with his time next to Seves. And not too long ago, I declared Andy Greene’s career revived while playing with Severson. How many partners in a row need to improve before we say that

Travis Yost: Joel Edmundson and Jeff Petry look like the best defensive pairing in North Division

Do the Montreal Canadiens have the best defensive pairing in the North Division? I’m starting to think the answer to that question is yes. When general manager Marc Bergevin signed Joel Edmundson to a four-year, $14 million-dollar contract this past off-season, it seemed likely he would be slotted into the team’s second pairing alongside Jeff Petry. Behind the Shea Weber and Ben Chiarot pairing, it gave Montreal a very stable top four on the blueline. But the second pairing has been much better than stable. In fact, stable feels like a bit of an insult, as does calling them the second pairing.
