Some fellas knew no matter how well they played, they d never get picked Others knew they would always get picked

The recent meeting of Leinster and Munster – each at full-strength, for once – so close to Ireland’s championship opener, along with the variety of selection sub-plots in Limerick, evoked for many of a certain vintage the era when there truly was a final trial. Few recall these as halcyon days. They ruined Christmas. They heightened the pomposity of those selecting the team rather than those who coached it. The matches were predominantly dour affairs. And after all the fuss, the IRFU remained so historically blinkered that they rarely influenced selection. Their affected arrogance was such that they didn’t even advertise the matches as ‘possibles’ versus ‘probables’ but rather ‘whites’ versus ‘blues’.

Down Memory Lane: India s First Victory in a Test

Sir, India’s glorious victory down under has brought back memories of a Test match nearly 70 years ago. Though India had started playing Test cricket from 1932 onwards, we had not won a single Test match for nearly 20 years. We would lose most of the matches and occasionally draw a match. India would consider a drawn match as a moral victory. Then the India Vs England series was held during the 1951-1952 season in India. Thanks to some brilliant batting by Pankaj Roy, Polly Umrigar and Vijay Hazare we managed to draw the first three Test matches. However during the Fourth Match, our batsmen succumbed and we lost the match decisively.
