COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Losing a loved one is already a nightmare. For some South Carolina families, that grieving process has been prolonged as they have had to wait weeks to hold a burial.
That’s because of a death certificate delay, caused by the Department of Health and Environmental Control’s new system for filing death certificates.
DHEC moved to Genesis Systems on January 11 because the old one used Adobe Flash, which was set to expire on Jan. 12. Since then, the system has experienced glitches, leaving some families in limbo.

Mysore/Mysuru: In a move that is bound to create problems for a majority of citizens, the State Government has made entry of
ration card number in applications for issuance of Birth and Death Certificates by all local bodies and also for availing Government services and benefits extended by all Boards and Corporations.
The Birth and Death Certificates are currently being issued using the e-Janma Software. Now, with the Government making changes in the software for incorporating ration card number, all Registrars and Sub-Registrars have been directed to collect the ration card number.
SOUTH BEND â The initial rollout of Indianaâs new vital records system this month has led to long delays for some families seeking death certificates for deceased loved ones, though some local funeral directors say the process has improved in recent days.
Soon after the state switched to the new system, called DRIVE, on Jan. 4, funeral homes began to see a backlog in death certificates.
At one point, McGann Hay funeral homes were waiting for about two dozen pending death certificates, co-owner Patrick McGann said.
Thatâs a burden for families because a certified copy of a death certificate is required not only to cremate a body, but also to collect life insurance money, open an estate, pay a deceased personâs bills and access a non-spousal bank account.
