A SKULL found by a dog walker may belong to a World War Two RAF hero, a historian has suggested. The shock discovery was made by Steve Turner at Soutergate in Kirkby after his dog tripped over the remains. And now John Nixon, who has written a number of books on the history of aircrafts in the area, believes the skull could belong to a long-lost pilot who crashed near the Duddon Estuary on November 9, 1944. He said the wreckage of Mosquito LR359 dove into the sea and washed up a few years later. The body of the airman, Lieutenant Alan Charles Powell, was never found, said Mr Nixon.
