Seeing with emotion: Remembering Cleveland artist John W. Carlson Anne Nickoloff, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio On the first floor of Cleveland’s ArtCraft building, all the tools of an artist cans of paint, jars of used brushes, canvases and sketchpads are placed on the floor and tables in a long studio. Wooden shelves hold up decades’ worth of work: paintings, sketches, drawings and photographs. That work was left behind when John W. Carlson suddenly died on Dec. 20, 2020, due to an abdominal aneurysm. He was 66. The art in Carlson’s studio reflects the Cleveland artist’s whole life in images of joy, laughter, grief and pain.

A rapidly rising painter of note, he s also a spoken word artist and has written and published three books. In 2020, the now 44-year-old Erieite completed two public art projects, one that beautified the exterior of the Whole Foods Co-op, and one mural that adorns the wall next to Luther Manus 12th Street Sunoco station. He was recently selected to provide the art for two City of Erie bandwagons, , which are regularly deployed at more than 40 events each year. After being awarded Erie Arts & Culture s Emerging Artist Fellowship in 2019, he is now an artist in residence with the organization, helping to re-envision bikeways and public spaces around the city. Laura Domencic Named Executive Director of Erie Art Museum

January 22, 2021 at 5:00pm Arts consultant and curator Laura Domencic has been appointed executive director of the Erie Art Museum, Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh native will assume her new role on February 8, replacing interim director Pam Masi, who had occupied the post since March, following the hasty January exit of executive director Joshua Helmer. Helmer had been with the institution for less than two years before allegations that he had behaved inappropriately toward female colleagues at the museum and at the Philadelphia Art Museum, where he had previously worked as an associate curator, caught up with him, forcing his departure. “It is an honor for me to be invited to be a part of the Erie Art Museum,” said Domencic in a statement. “I look forward to working with the staff and board to deepen the connection of the museum within community life and to grow its financial resources. Consultant, curator Laura Domencic named Erie Art Museum director

Laura Domencic, an arts consultant and curator from Pittsburgh, was announced Friday as the Erie Art Museum s new executive director. Her appointment was unanimously approved by the museum’s Board of Directors, and she will assume her duties Feb. 8, museum officials said in a statement. Domencic most recently worked as an arts consultant, arts curator and fundraiser. For the past three years, she has also led an artist residency program in Ambialet, France. Erie is a great community, Domencic said via email. There s a lot of opportunity here, with the community on an exciting trajectory, and I look forward to the possibilities for the museum.
