BYB 2021 Detroit Tigers prospects #11: C Jake Rogers

Photo by Mark Cunningham/MLB Photos via Getty Images If there is one overwhelming flaw in the Detroit Tigers attempt to rebuild the franchise, it’s the lack of trade return in the 2017 sell-off. While the Chicago White Sox landed Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease for starter Jose Quintana earlier that summer, the Tigers have yet to see anything from the Justin Verlander deal with the Houston Astros. Catcher Jake Rogers was never the centerpiece of the trade, but there was hope of getting an elite defensive catcher with some power. Unfortunately, on every front, the deal hasn’t gone as planned.

Democrat Liz Allen: the race for Erie City Council

Local governance, Allen has said in previous interviews, can be frustrating.  But the former Erie Times-News editor and reporter, who was first elected to City Council in 2017, ultimately decided to launch a re-election bid because she feels that city government has plenty of room to grow and improve, and she wants to be a part of that. There is much more to do, said Allen, 69, said in a February interview.  I want to continue to scrutinize the budget and ask the hard questions. Allen is among eight Democrats and two Republicans in the City Council race.  Four of City Council s seven seats are on the ballot in the May 18 municipal primary.

No matter what happens at the polls, the seven-member panel will look much different in 2022.  However, only one of City Council’s current members whose seat is on the ballot, Democrat Liz Allen, chose to seek re-election. Besides Allen, a former reporter and editor at the Erie Times-News who was first elected to City Council in 2017, the other Democrats on the ballot are Jasmine Flores; Elspeth “Kate” Koehle; Kendrick Tate; Cory DiLoreto; Marcus P. Yuille; Maurice “Mo” Troop; and Chuck Nelson, a pastor who lives in the city’s west bayfront.   Flores, Koehle and Tate are running as a slate affiliated with local social justice group Erie County United.

Riley Greene is headed to Erie. Matt Manning and friends are headed to Toledo. Most of the Detroit Tigers minor-league affiliates released their Opening Day rosters on Thursday, including the Class A (advanced) West Michigan Whitecaps, the Double-A Erie SeaWolves and the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. It’s a later start than usual for the minor leagues, which were pushed back one month due to the coronavirus pandemic. Some players assigned the Tigers’ alternate site have spent April in Toledo; the rest have been going through a “minor-league spring training” in Lakeland.

DeFelice/Getty Images The West Michigan Whitecaps will have some real drawing power when their Midwest League season begins on May 4th. With their home opener slated for May 11th against the Great Lakes Loons, the roster will feature a host of interesting prospects, including the Detroit Tigers two newest high-end prospects. The Whitecaps’ announced their starting roster today, headed by 2020 first overall pick Spencer Torkelson, and second round pick, catcher Dillon Dingler. Overall, the Whitecaps roster is probably the most interesting group among all the affiliates. The Toledo Mud Hens will have top pitching prospect Matt Manning, as well as infielder Isaac Paredes and centerfielder Daz Cameron, but the Whitecaps roster has some intriguing names in a system that could really use a few guys to break out.
