Duke of Edinburgh s Funeral details announced - funeral will take place on Saturday 17 April - Gold FM News - Srilanka s Number One News Portal, Most visited website in Sri Lanka

Tuesday, 13 April 2021 - 7:53 The Duke of Edinburgh’s Funeral will take place on Saturday 17 April 2021 at 3pm in St George’s Chapel, Windsor. The Funeral Service will begin with a National Minute’s Silence at three o’clock. The service will be preceded by a ceremonial procession inside the grounds of Windsor Castle. The plans for the funeral are in line with The Duke of Edinburgh s own personal wishes, and the occasion will recognise and celebrate The Duke’s life and his more than 70 years of service to The Queen, the UK and the Commonwealth. It will be a Ceremonial Royal Funeral, the same as for Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, rather than a State Funeral – something which is generally reserved for Monarchs. The plans have been approved by The Queen and reflect appropriate Government advice.

ROBERT HARDMAN: Philip s guided tour of his final resting place

Advertisement He could now be lying in state in Westminster Hall with many thousands filing past his coffin day and night, as they did before the last funeral of a royal consort, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, in 2002. Instead, in line with his own ‘no fuss’ mantra, Prince Philip is at rest in the small private chapel at Windsor Castle, visited by just a handful of family and friends. But at least we are all able to have a proper look at this charming, little-known royal sanctuary and also to hear about it from the man who designed it the Duke himself.

However, the event has been significantly reduced in scale in order to comply with strict coronavirus guidelines and as such, there will be no public procession and there will be no public access. Only 30 mourners, expected to include the Queen, the Duke s children, grandchildren and his private secretary, will attend. The funeral will take place entirely within the grounds of Windsor Castle. It comes after the palace discouraged wellwishers from gathering outside royal residences to lay flowers. A palace spokesperson said: “The occasion will still celebrate and recognise the Duke’s life and his more than 70 years of service to the Queen, the UK and the Commonwealth.”
