R. Riveter has launched a scholarship program aimed at empowering military-connected entrepreneurs by helping them to finance their dreams. Named the Riveter Fund, two $2,100 awards will be presented later this summer.
Cameron Cruse and Lisa Bradley co founded their signature handbag business in 2011. Named after the World War II cone Roside, R. Riveter today employs remote ârivetersâ who assemble components often from military surplus materials in their homes and send them to Moore County for fabrication. The bags are then sold online and in R. Riveterâs flagship store in downtown Southern Pines.
The idea for the Riveter Fund was inspired by their own journey. Itâs their way of saying âif we can do it, you can too.â

UCHealth has formed a committee in Colorado Springs aimed at supporting military spouses.
The committee of about 25 people is in the early stages of deciding what the vision of the organization will be, but officials say a major focus will be on professional networking and mentoring military spouses in the workplace.
That sounds great to Jamie Schnaak, a surgical trauma nurse working in the cardiovascular and thoracic unit for UCHealth who said she was “kicked out the door” and replaced in a job in Atlanta when she got engaged to an “Army guy”.
Ten years later, Schnaak, co-chair of the committee, is happy to be at UCHealth, where her manager understands the flexibility needed for military families and their unpredictable lifestyle.

Armed Forces Day pays tribute to those serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, including those in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard, as well as those in the National Guard and Reserve. It takes place during Armed Forces Week, which begins the Saturday before the day, and during National Military Appreciation Month, which also includes holidays such as Military Spouse Appreciation Day, V-E Day, and Memorial Day.
On July 26, 1947, President Truman signed the National Security Act, which brought the branches of the military under the National Military Establishment. It was renamed the Department of Defense in 1949. President Truman issued a proclamation calling for the first celebration to be held on May 20.

May is a significant month for the military in terms of scheduled observances. And the military, through the operations at Travis Air Force Base, is an integral part of the local community.
The base in Fairfield had a total economic impact in the 2016 federal fiscal year of $1.65 billion. It’s the latest economic impact study from the base and covers the time period of Oct. 1, 2015, through Sept. 30, 2016.
Base operations have expanded since then, to include work to prepare Travis for the new KC-46 Pegasus refueling aircraft.
Nearly half of those who work at the base live off base and as such are members of the local communities.
