8 Making the decision to change careers may not be easy, but it can lead to rewarding opportunities. Cpl. Ciara O’Connor, 747th Military Police Company, Ware, Mass., made a brave choice to change her career path when she found a new passion for helping others.
Since she was young, O’Connor saw herself becoming a teacher. Seeing her future self in the classroom, she would imagine herself reading books to others and teaching classes. O’Connor wanted the opportunity to be a positive role model for others, especially children.
“I want to be that light, showing them that they are strong, capable and know what they can be,” said O’Connor.
We all have an opportunity to celebrate and honor military veterans next weekend.
The Armed Forces Day Parade is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 1 in Downtown McAlester with marching bands, a flyover, vintage military vehicles, and more planned for the event.
This year s theme is the 30th anniversary of Operation Desert Storm, when the McAlester-based 445th Military Police Company of the Oklahoma National Guard was deployed to the Middle East.
That will bring back all kinds of memories for many in our community about the day when several of our family, friends and neighbors were deployed.
But we hope that the parade, festivities and block party on May 1 will serve as a fun celebration recognizing those who served our country.
21 WASHINGTON, D.C. – National Guard troops from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and three U.S. territories mobilized nearly 25,000 Guardsmen to support law enforcement in the nation s capital during the 59th presidential inauguration.
This included nearly 30 members of the Oregon National Guard’s 1186th Military Police Company from Salem, Oregon, who first arrived on Jan. 15, 2021, prior to the presidential inauguration for Joseph R. Biden Jr., on Jan. 20, 2021.
“The soldiers and airmen will be under the command and control of Maj. Gen. William Walker, the Commanding General of D.C. National Guard, and are providing security, communications, logistics and coordination with all supported agencies,” said Army Gen. Daniel Hokanson, chief of the National Guard Bureau as Guardsmen began to arrive. “As always, our first priority is to protect people and property – and the safety and wellbeing of our National Guard personnel and their families.”
