HIGH POINT â Families and friends of retired and active veterans gathered Saturday at the Heroes Center in observation of Military Appreciation Day.
Brigadier Gen. James R. Gorham, a retired veteran and the first Black officer to become a general in the N.C. National Guard, shared his personal experiences and lifted up the cause of homeless veterans.
âThereâs a lot of veterans out there who are suffering for various reasons,â Gorham said. âSome of us have lost hope, but Iâm here to give an encouraging word to who might want to receive it today.â
Gorham shared his story of growing up as a sharecropperâs son in a family of 11 in eastern North Carolina. After joining the military, Gorham resolved to climb 13 miles to the top of Pikes Peak when he was sent to Colorado Springs, Colorado. May is a significant month for the military in terms of scheduled observances. And the military, through the operations at Travis Air Force Base, is an integral part of the local community.
The base in Fairfield had a total economic impact in the 2016 federal fiscal year of $1.65 billion. It’s the latest economic impact study from the base and covers the time period of Oct. 1, 2015, through Sept. 30, 2016.
Base operations have expanded since then, to include work to prepare Travis for the new KC-46 Pegasus refueling aircraft.
Nearly half of those who work at the base live off base and as such are members of the local communities.
DeSoto military appreciation event to feature free burgers Saturday

DeSoto’s Veterans Affairs Committee will be honoring those in the armed services and veterans on Saturday as part of their annual Military Appreciation Day with free food and gift bags.
In-N-Out Burger will be creating a drive-through in the south parking lot of DeSoto Town Center, 211 E. Pleasant Run Road. The first 200 veterans or active-duty military members, along with their families will receive free burger meals, according to an announcement on Facebook. Kids will also receive a bag of goodies prepared by the veterans affairs committee.
