Memorial Day 2021: U.S., emerging from pandemic, honors the fallen

The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum held a somber ceremony on Memorial Day.
A nation slowly emerging from social distancing measures imposed by the coronavirus pandemic honored generations of U.S. veterans killed in the line of duty on a Memorial Day observed without the severe pandemic restrictions that affected the day of tribute just a year ago.
Memorial Day parades and events were held in localities large and small across the country Monday, many resuming after being canceled last year as the pandemic hit with full force.

A bell tolled, signaling that the Marine staff sergeantâs name had been added to the memorialâs panels, which honor the approximately 12,000 Virginians who have died in wars ranging from World War II to the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
âAs often is the case, the names are not the most recent losses to a war, but identities that were brought to our attention by families or friends during the year and that we were able to verify and finally add to their rightful place of remembrance,â Mountcastle said with a nod to May. âThese names are here now permanently.
