Salvation Army Corps Officer Captain Kathryn Mayes and Assistant Corps Officer Samantha Lockard were present to receive the proclamation.

Lufkin Mayor Mark Hicks stopped by the Salvation Army of Lufkin Wednesday to read a proclamation made by the City of Lufkin for the week. Nationally, the week is observed immediately following Mother’s Day in May and was first declared by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954, as an opportunity to celebrate the volunteers, donors and program beneficiaries who help the Salvation Army.

Tags:  What s News Today (WSLS 10) The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will get an update from Montgomery Executive Airport officials about plans to lengthen the runway. The airport plans to increase the length by 20 percent, which will allow it to accommodate nearly three-quarters of all business jets. As we’ve reported, the airport got a $1.3 million federal grant last year for the project. Part of Parkland Drive in Lynchburg will close daily through Thursday. Crews will work from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Thursday from Boonsboro Road to Morrison Drive, repairing the pavement. A detour will be in place.

However, the organization also faced its own issues as the organization closed its Killeen family store last May, citing the inability to operate due to the ongoing pandemic at the time. The store, Lt. Aaron Millin said at the time, provided additional funding to community programs but was forced to close as it no longer helped the organization. The organization also surpassed its normal workloads while helping the community with food assistance as early as April of last year.  With increased demand fueled by the pandemic and a decrease in regular donations, the Salvation Army even began its iconic Red Kettle Campaign earlier in 2020 to try and close the gap in donations they were receiving. The organization went on with its annual Christmastime campaign to continue supporting families and residents impacted by COVID-19.
