Pick for Britain campaign scrapped

The ongoing pandemic and slower rollout of vaccinations in Europe could prove to be a barrier to seasonal workers coming in to the UK in the months ahead (Photo: Rob Haining) DEFRA’S ‘PICK for Britain’ campaign has been shelved, a year on from nationwide calls to rally a homegrown workforce for the horticultural sector. Last year’s campaign aimed to fill the gaps left by seasonal migrant workers who were restricted from travelling to the UK due to the pandemic. The initiative attracted huge interest from members of the public, many of whom had been placed on furlough. However, those interest levels weren’t reflected in the uptake of roles – only 11% of the seasonal workforce for 2020 was made up of British workers, according to National Farmers Union. figures.
