Extinct Pinatubo Volcano Mouse Rediscovered | Mysterious Universe

It’s tough to stand out in the world of mice. The long-nosed Luzon forest mouse did it by living inside an active volcano in the Philippines – earning it the name Pinatubo volcano mouse. Unfortunately, Mount Pinatubo on the island of Luzon erupted violently on June 15, 1991, killing over 800 people, the lush forests that covered its slopes … and the last of the Pinatubo volcano mice. Or so it was thought. After not having been seen in decades, a recent survey of the volcano – which still shows evidence of the devastation – found the Pinatubo volcano mice somehow survived and are making a comeback.

When a colossal plume of ash and lava exploded from Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991, few people probably had their minds on the animal life in the area, much less one species of rodent. The Pinatubo mouse was feared extinct after the eruption, but 30 years later, it turns out that the scrappy critters are actually thriving.

Danny Balete/Field Museum Good news: A tiny mouse thought to be extinct has been found again, and it s thriving.  Mount Pinatubo on the island Luzon in the Philippines erupted violently in 1991, killing hundreds and destroying the landscape around it. Later expeditions to study the wildlife in the area turned up the surprising survival of a diverse group of fauna, including bats and a very rare volcano-dwelling mouse.
