Consumers continuing to eat at home, weather disruptions impact store visits and basket size
As Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage’s second quarter ended on March 31, the last few weeks lapped the initial pantry surge at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Consumers are still socially distancing and mostly eating at home, Chief Financial Officer Todd Dissinger said during an earnings call with analysts Thursday afternoon. One behavior that hasn t changed is consumers shopping less frequently but buying more per trip.
For the second quarter, daily average comparable store sales dropped 7% from Q2 of fiscal 2020. In Q2 2020, comparable store sales were 17% higher than they were in 2019.
Pueblo’s only Natural Grocers will soon move into a bigger space right next door to its current location.
The grocery store at 101 W. 29th Street will keep its current address when it moves across the parking lot into its new, 30% larger building. The current store will close May 3 and the new store is set to open May 6.
“The Pueblo store opened its doors to the Pueblo community in 2002, so it has been open in the same space for almost 20 years,” said Heather Isely, Natural Grocers’ executive vice president.
“It was our 17th store companywide and the 17th store opened in Colorado. Since then we’ve revamped and modernized so many aspects of the Natural Grocers’ shopping experience. We knew our Pueblo community could benefit (from) those changes including our new Nutrition Education Center, more efficient checkout lanes and expanded product selections.”
