Great River Road Receives National Designation

By Jeremy Coumbes on February 23, 2021 at 6:22pm A portion of scenic highway in Western Illinois has received national designation. U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill) today announced the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has designated Illinois’ portion of the Great River Road along the Mississippi River as an All-American Road for both its historic and cultural significance. Davis says the designation was made pursuant to the Reviving America’s Scenic Byways Act of 2019 which aims to recognize, preserve and enhance selected roads. He says the designation will bring more regional and national attention to the Great River Road National Scenic Byway which should increase tourism activity that supports many communities he serves.

Flaming Gorge - Green River Basin Scenic Byway Designated as All-American Road

SWEETWATER COUNTY – The Sweetwater County Travel & Tourism Board (SWCTTB) is proud to announce that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has designated the Flaming Gorge – Green Basin Scenic Byway as an All-American Road. The SWCTT board, along with several partners around the byway, submitted an application to the FHWA in 2020 and the application was successful. “This has been a dream, 20-plus years in the making,” said Jenissa Meredith, Executive Director of Sweetwater County Travel and Tourism. “I was fortunate to be involved in preparing this application over a decade ago when Dave Hanks, former CEO of the Rock Springs Chamber of Commerce, included me in the project,” added Meredith. “It is such an honor to see this designation finally become a reality.”
