Ae o were once much more common in Hawaii, but loss of wetland habitat and introduction of mammalian predators has reduced their population to less than 1500 birds.
Hawaiian stilts build their nests on the ground near shallow wetlands. Ae o are known to aggressively defend their nests by dive-bombing and loudly scolding any intruder, including humans, that comes near.
Ae o are considered to be the kinolau, or physical manifestation, of the Hawaiian god Kū in his fisherman form.

Educator, award-winning musician, Hawaiian language advocate.
Kainani Kahaunaele does it all. A proud alumna-turned-employee of the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, she credits much of her success to former mentors and peers who have fostered her knowledge of both Hawaiian language and culture.
Born and raised on Kauaʻi, Kahaunaele graduated from Kapaʻa High School, and enrolled at Kauaʻi Community College, at which her steadfast interest in her Kānaka Maoli heritage manifested into a membership in the school’s Hawaiian club.
I have to be the example that Hawaiian is a living language that you can apply in all facets of your life.

DOH) has final approval on who receives the vaccine and when. Based on the emerging knowledge about COVID-19 disease and the supply of the vaccine in the state,
DOH determines priority groups to be vaccinated. The prioritization list in the message sent on February 9, 2021, is for internal use by the University of Hawaiʻi. The
UH System is committed to following the
DOH vaccination prioritization order as it exists today or may change in the future.
At this time, given the limited supply of vaccines,
UH student athletes and student residents on campus cannot be part of a group that is prioritized above frontline essential workers. The group formerly consisting of 1B-4 workers will now be categorized as 1B-3 workers. We will continue to work to vaccinate our student athletes and residents on campus, in a manner consistent with
