Bass, however, announced last week that the lawmakers would not meet the May 25 deadline, but assured reporters that “it’s not going to take months.”
The House earlier this month approved the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act in a 220-212 vote, but the legislation has since stalled in the Senate due to Republican opposition.
The bill was first introduced by Bass in June after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd s neck for more than nine minutes, killing him. Chauvin was found guilty of Floyd s murder last month.
The main sticking point between the two parties is qualified immunity, the doctrine that protects state and local government officials, including law enforcement, from most liability in civil suits unless they violate a person’s clearly established constitutional rights.

The administration is under pressure to get something done given its deliberate focus on addressing racial inequality.
“Obviously, we are in close touch, and we certainly defer to the expectations of the key negotiators here. And I would note that Senator Booker has indicated that there s good energy to the talks. Senator Scott has said that ‘The key for us . is to keep making progress.’ And we certainly support those efforts,” White House Press secretary Jen Psaki

ANGOLA â The Knights of Columbus are frequently holding fundraisers for organizations in the community.
On May 30, the breakfast fundraiser being held at St. Anthonyâs Catholic Church, 700 W. Maumee St., from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. will benefit Childrenâs Autism Center, Angola.
All the money raised will stay local to benefit the children at the center.
Childrenâs Autism Center was founded in 2005, with the Angola branch opening in 2017.
âMy boss has a son with an autism diagnosis, so she looked for ways to help him,â said Emily Wyss, a board certified assistant behavioral analysis with Childrenâs Autism Center, Angola. âShe found a board certified behavioral analyst from Chicago that came to consult and provide services.â
