Texans ages 12-15 now eligible for Pfizer vaccine

Thursday, May 13, 2021 The Texas Department of State Health Services announced that adolescent Texans between the ages of 12-15 are now eligible to receive a Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.  Texas’ move follows federal guidance, allowing the newest age group to receive a vaccine. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the vaccine for adolescents on Monday and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended it for 12-15 year olds on Tuesday.  “While children are less likely than adults to be hospitalized or die from COVID-19, they can be infected with the virus and spread infection in their homes and communities,” said Imelda Garcia, DSHS associate commissioner for laboratory and infections disease services, and chair of the state’s Expert Vaccine Allocation Panel. “DSHS believes that promptly vaccinating the adolescents in this age group is another valuable tool that will help end the COVID-19 pandemic and have a direct and positive effect on schools be

CDC Approves Less Masking As Pfizer Shots for 12+ Begin

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control has revealed new guidelines on mask-wearing for folks fully vaccinated against COVID-19, namely that the fully vaccinated can go maskless in public and without social distancing from others in all but a few specific settings. The news came one day after the agency echoed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in recommending that Pfizer’s two-shot coronavirus vaccine could be safely administered to children between the ages of 12 and 15. In a virtual White House briefing Thursday, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky announced that two weeks after a person receives their final dose of any of the available COVID-19 vaccines, they can safely quit wearing face masks outdoors in all scenarios, and can even ditch their face masks indoors in most places.

Texas won't require COVID-19 vaccinations for public school students next fall

Texas won’t require COVID-19 vaccinations for public school students next fall The state of Texas will not require eligible public school students to get a COVID-19 vaccination before returning to class for the 2021-22 academic year. Texas Department of State Health Services Associate Commissioner Imelda Garcia shared that information during a COVID-19 news briefing Thursday, May 13. She said the department typically follows the state Legislature’s lead on deciding what vaccines to require, and there are no plans to make the COVID-19 vaccine mandatory this fall for students. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices followed suit on Wednesday, May 12, and endorsed vaccines for that age group.

Texas to stop weekly COVID vaccine allocations to providers, citing supply exceeding demand

Thursday, May 6, 2021 The Texas Department of State Health Services announced Thursday that it would no longer allocate COVID-19 vaccines to providers on a weekly basis, citing supply regularly exceeding demand.  The DSHS said it would fill vaccine orders from providers as they come in and a DSHS pharmacy will ship vaccines and will  place orders with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on a daily basis.  “This is a big step in vaccine distribution,” said Imelda Garcia, DSHS associate commissioner for laboratory and infectious disease services. “The ability to ship vaccine to pharmacies, doctors’ offices, and other providers as they need it will go a long way to making sure it is available when and where Texans want to be vaccinated.”
