ONE reveals LoI to charter six 24,000+TEU newbuild behemoths December 24, 2020, by Jasmina Ovcina Ocean Network Express (ONE) has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Shoei Kisen Kaisha, the shipowning arm of Japanese yard Imabari Shipbuilding, for the 15-year long-term charter of six new 24,000 + TEU Ultra Large Container Ships (ULCS). The new buildings are planned to be built by the consortium of Imabari Shipbuilding and Japan Marine United Corporation, with delivery slated in 2023/2024.
“This new class of ships will join our core fleet and forms part of our ongoing strategy to introduce large, modern, and fuel-efficient vessels to further strengthen our fleet competitiveness,” ONE said.

ONE said the six ultra-large containerships (ULCS) would be the largest ever and built by a consortium of Imabari Shipbuilding and Japan Marine United (JMU) for delivery in 2023 and 2024. ONE will charter the vessels for 15 years from Shoei Kisen Kaisha.
“Currently, the world’s largest ULCS have a maximum capacity of slightly below 24,000 teu. The six new ULCS with capacity exceeding 24,000 teu will help bring economies of scale and significantly lower carbon emissions through a state-of-the-art hull design that aims to maximize cargo intake and minimize fuel consumption,” ONE said.

Japanese shipbuilding majors Imabari Shipbuilding and Japan Marine United Corporation have received approvals from all competition authorities to move forward with the establishment of their Joint Venture company.
As disclosed, the capital and business alliance and the establishment of the joint venture company is set for January 1, 2021.
“The date has been finalized due to the conclusion of all reviews and approval processes related to competition law abroad. All remaining preparations are now being carried out,” JMU said.
The duo formalized their capital tie-up in December 2019.
The alliance aims to bolster the shipbuilders’ competitiveness in an ever-intensifying competitive environment in the merchant shipbuilding business.

Evergreen Line took delivery of its sixth and seventh new 12,000 TEU class F-type containerships, the company said in its release. Ever Forever was built at the Geoje Shipyard of Samsung Heavy Industries. The name of this ship symbolizes her owner’s corporate philosophy of sustainable development. Ever Far was delivered by Imabari Shipbuilding, the name represents Evergreen’s comprehensive service network.
With the blessing of fleet superintendents and the shipyards’ executives, the two new large containerships set sail in good order after the delivery procedures were completed. The ships’ 58,000-horsepower main engines are powering the technically advanced vessels to their allocated loading ports on Evergreen’s trans-Pacific services while the propellers, which measure nearly ten meters in diameter, are driving them efficiently toward their new employment.
