AHMEDABAD: Gujarat reeled under relentless third surge of coronavirus as the state breached the 3,000 Covid-19 cases in a day for the first time on Monday. Total 3,160 cases were reported which calculated to roughly two Covid-19 cases detected every minute in the state. Fifteen people succumbed to the infection.
In such a scenario, authorities of the Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, the biggest Covid-designated hospital in the state, revealed that a total of 899 patients were hospitalized with corona complications in the past nine days. Of these, 95% of patients eligible for the Covid-19 protective jab had not got vaccinated.
Surat: The coronavirus claimed the lives of seven person, including three women and infected 603 others in Surat city on Monday. On Sunday, eight patients had died due to the virus.
According to Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), the city reported 603 fresh Covid-19 cases on Monday, which was the second highest in the state after Ahmedabad, taking the case tally to 52,878 in the Diamond City. The Covid-19 ‘hotspot’ Athwa zone continued to report the highest number of daily infections with 107 cases, followed by 87 in Rander and 80 in Limbayat zone.
The patients who died due to Covid-19 infection included a 26-year-old woman from Udhna, a 70-year-old man from Adajan Patiya, a 75-year-old man from Varachha, a 64-year-old woman from Parvat Patiya, a 73-year-old man from Nana Varachha, a 53-year-old woman from Piplod and a 65-year-old man from Jahangirabad.
The baby girl delivered in the ambulance to the farm labourer
SURAT: A pregnant woman who had tested positive for Covid-19 delivered a healthy baby girl in a 108 EMRI ambulance on Monday while being taken to New Civil Hospital in Surat from Bardoli.
The patient is a 23-yearold farm labourer. The 108 staff oversaw the delivery and tended to her in the ambulance.
The woman had been brought to a hospital in Bardoli for delivery after she got labour pains on Sunday. She tested Covid-19 positive at the time of admission.
The 108 team of Twinkle Patel, emergency medical technician, and Tejas Chaudhary, ambulance driver, were taking her to New Civil Hospital on Monday. About a kilometre from the hospital, the woman started getting labour pains again. Patel, dressed in PPE, helped to deliver the child.
Surat: The state-run New Civil Hospital (NCH), the biggest Covid-19 hospital of south Gujarat, reached is maximum capacity of patients’ intake on Mond.
Health department officials said they are still compiling figures for vaccination for persons older than 45 years, but the response has been good.
AHMEDABAD: With 4.22 lakh shots of the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine administered in 24 hours – the highest for a single day so far – Gujarat crossed 50 lakh vaccinations at 53.68 lakh in 75 days. The state vaccinated an average of 71,573 persons a day.
Analysis of vaccination figures so far reveals that the campaign was driven primarily by senior citizens and those with comorbidities.
These groups not only accounted for 81% of vaccinations administered in the state with around 40 lakh of the 49 lakh vaccinations till March 31, but also covered 77% of the target group – second only to healthcare workers (HCW) at 87%.
