Onondaga County is informing the residents anticipating their second dose of all the necessary action that must be taken to ensure the process is efficient and effective.
County Executive Ryan McMahon said anyone who received a first dose of the vaccine from the county will be contacted when it is time to schedule a second dose. However, McMahon said it is essential to get a second vaccine dose at the same place that you got your first vaccine dose.
“We have been giving Moderna. The Fairgrounds is giving Pfizer. You can’t mix the two,” said McMahon.
McMahon said at some point the county may be giving doses of Pfizer, Moderna, and future-approved vaccines at the same time. But county staff will orchestrate its operations to make sure the first and second doses are the same. Health Commissioner Dr. Indu Gupta said making an appointment for a second dose at a different location impacts the entire vaccine distribution.

Syracuse, N.Y. – Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon today said he is sending 175 additional county workers to help investigate new cases of coronavirus, the flood of which continues to overwhelm the health department.
The added personnel will roughly triple the number of county employees available to contact people who test positive for the virus and track down others they may have infected. Reinforcements are necessary to deal with caseloads that have averaged more than 300 a day in December, up from roughly 40 a day in October.

County Executive Ryan McMahon said the county plans to increase coronavirus case investigators, widely test for the virus, and start its vaccine distribution plans all as COVID-19 cases and deaths rise.
McMahon said 20 people have died of the virus since Friday. The county’s infection rate is now 6.9%. Health Commissioner Dr. Indu Gupta said health precautions remain vital in the time before large scale vaccination.
“If you’re wearing face covering and following physical distancing and staying home when sick or not having get-togethers, you literally can save at least one person’s life maybe. It may not be immediately you, but that’s something. You may have seen a third person, second person.”
