NM water managers warn communities to prepare for low Rio Grande

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... The Rio Grande at N.M. 346 in June. About 12 billion gallons of stored water from El Vado Reservoir helped keep the river flowing in central New Mexico last year, but water managers won’t have that option this year. (Jim Thompson/Albuquerque Journal) ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. New Mexico water agencies are urging farmers to think twice about planting crops in what could be a tight water year. The state faces a big water debt to downstream users, and a multi-year drought is taking its toll. The Office of the State Engineer recommends “that farmers along the Rio Chama and in the Middle Valley that don’t absolutely need to farm this year, do not farm,” according to a staff report that Interstate Stream Commission Director Rolf Schmidt-Petersen presented to the Commission earlier this month.

New Mexico House passes new rules for virtual session

LAS CRUCES - The New Mexico House Rules and Order of Business Committee approved new rules Friday, Jan. 22, requiring that all debate during floor sessions and committee meetings this year be conducted by Zoom. The meetings will be broadcast online, with some ability to provide comments during committee debates. All legislation to be considered by the full House will be placed on a temporary calendar for at least 24 hours in an effort to improve transparency. “These temporary rule changes are necessary to ensure fair and remote participation by the public and legislators so that the state can pass the critical legislation necessary to recover from COVID-19 and uplift our state,” said House Parliamentarian, state Rep. Daymon Ely, D-Corrales.

State nearing Pecos Valley pumping goals - Roswell Daily Record

Commission official says Carlsbad Irrigation District still likely to have water shortfall Even with pumping from its wellfields in southeastern New Mexico, the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission thinks the Carlsbad Irrigation District will have significantly less than 50,000 acre-feet of water available for the 2021 irrigation season, a state official said. Hannah Riseley-White, deputy director of the commission and the Pecos River Basin bureau chief, gave an update Friday about the use of the wellfields at Seven Rivers near Brantley Reservoir and at Lake Arthur. She said almost 6,000 acre-feet of water has been delivered from the two wellfields to Brantley since October.
