Many Lynchburg-area colleges on track to see increased fall enrollment

As Lynchburg-area colleges and universities plan for a return to normal after an atypical 2020-21 academic year, many are on track to see increased enrollment heading into the fall semester.

The governing body of Virginia’s community college system is urging two institutions — including Dabney S. Lancaster Community College in Clifton Forge — to reconsider their decisions to maintain the names of their schools that honor people who advocated for segregation or owned slaves. The State Board for Community Colleges initiated a process last July of having colleges examine the names of their schools and buildings. Of the 23 community colleges in Virginia, five of them are named after segregationists, slave owners and confederates. Three of them have already begun the process to change their names.

On Thursday, the 15-person State Board for Community Colleges announced it unanimously voted to direct Patrick Henry Community College and Dabney S. Lancaster Community College to reconsider their previous decisions to retain their names. PHCC is located in Henry County, not far from Martinsville, while DSLCC is in Alleghany County, just outside the town limits of Clifton Forge.
