Bird sightings on Cape Cod Recent sightings (through Jan. 19) as reported to Mass Audubon. An ash-throated flycatcher, a Townsend’s warbler, and a black-headed gull continued along the canal in Sagamore. A Western tanager continued to visit a feeder in Brewster. Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown included a sooty shearwater, a Thayer’s Iceland gull, a Northern fulmar, 2 Pacific loons, an Atlantic puffin, 21 common murres, 5 thick-billed murres, a black guillemot, 12 Iceland gulls, and a lesser black-backed gull. Other sightings around the Cape included 7 black vultures in Bourne, Eastern phoebes in Falmouth and Harwich, 40 common redpolls in Sandwich, 2 American woodcocks in Mashpee, 2 blue-winged teal at Mill Pond in Barnstable and/or Mill Pond in Marston’s Mills, 10 ruddy turnstones and 25 common redpolls at Seagull Beach in Yarmouth, a Baltimore oriole in Dennis, 3 chipping sparrows in Harwich, and orange-crowned warblers in Chatham and Harwich.

An ash-throated flycatcher and a Townsend’s warbler were both discovered along the canal in Sagamore, joining a black-headed gull that had been there two weeks. A Western tanager continued to visit a feeder in Brewster while another turned up at a feeder in Harwich. Rounding out the rare visitors from the west, a Western kingbird had been visiting a yard in Eastham. A remarkable flight of at least 61 Atlantic puffins was documented at First Encounter Beach in Eastham, along with 40 dovekies and 488 razorbills. Individual hoary redpolls were found among increasingly large common redpoll flocks in Sandwich and Wellfleet, which have numbered from 90-200.

Speculation about new episodes of the show began to swirl after 20th Century Studios filed an application in Provincetown earlier this month to request permission to film a then-mysterious project titled Pilgrim at 19th locations within the coastal resort town. The Provincetown Board of Selectmen granted the studio permission during a hearing on January 11. The application did not list any actors who will appear in season 10, according to Wicked Local’s Provincetown Banner, but it did promise that strict safety guidelines would be instilled on set amid the coronavirus outbreak. The studio said the cast and crew will be tested for the deadly virus three times a week and that personal protective equipment will be required for those not on camera, in addition to other precautions.

A painted bunting was found on Morris Island in Chatham. Two snow geese continued on fields near the center of Harwich. Highlights of the Truro Christmas Bird count included a hoary redpoll, a greater yellowlegs, a common murre, a thick-billed murre, and a dovekie at Lieutenant Island in Wellfleet, an indigo bunting and a king eider elsewhere in Wellfleet, a Eurasian green-winged teal, a great shearwater, 4 tree swallows, 2 Eastern phoebes, and 2 white-winged crossbills in Truro, and many reports of evening grosbeaks, red crossbills, and common redpolls various places.
