Brazil scrambles to buy vaccine as Covid-19 kills more than 1,000 a day 3 minutes read
Sao Paulo, Jan 26 (efe-epa).- The Covid-19 pandemic continues to rage out of control in Brazil, whose president said Tuesday that he had authorized private firms to buy the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine to immunize their employees provided the companies donate half of the doses to the public vaccination campaign.
“I want to make it very clear that the federal government is in favor of this group … bringing the vaccine here to immunize 33 million people, at zero cost for the federal government,” Jair Bolsonaro said during a virtual event hosted by Swiss investment bank Credit Suisse.

Sao Paulo, Jan 21 (efe-epa).- Baile funk, a musical genre that originated in the favelas, or slums, of Rio de Janeiro more than two decades ago, reached audiences far beyond Brazil’s borders in 2017 thanks to the smash hit “Bum bum, tam tam,” a song whose risque lyrics and catchy beat made it the first music video from that country to hit 1 billion views on YouTube.
Nearly four years after its release, that track now has emerged as the de facto anthem of Brazil’s recently launched vaccination drive.
The song experienced a revival after the Sao Paulo state government sought emergency-use approval for the CoronaVac, a vaccine developed by Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac Biotech in partnership with Brazil’s Instituto Butantan, which is affiliated with the Sao Paulo state health department.
After devolution of the application for emergency use, the future of 10 million doses of the vaccine against Covid-19 Sputnik V, produced by the Russian institute Gamaleya, which are on their way to Brazil is uncertain.
The request was made by União Química, a pharmaceutical industry that intends to distribute the immunizer in Brazil. The company expects to receive Russia 600 doses of Sputnik V still in January, followed by 3,4 million doses in February and 6 million doses in March. According to a report by Valor Econômico, the intention is to distribute in Brazil, still in 2021, 150 million doses of the vaccine.
