JIM CHAPMAN | The Journal Gazette
It has been 160 years since Sojourner Truth spoke on the porch of the Steuben County Courthouse in Angola.
At the time, the Indiana Constitution forbade Blacks from settling in the state.
On Sunday, the Downtown Angola Coalition will host a ceremony in the city s public square to unveil a life-size statue of Truth, commemorating the June 2, 1861, speech she gave in Steuben County.

Legislature Poised to Order Women’s Suffrage Marker at Statehouse
(INDIANAPOLIS) A marker commemorating the passage of women’s right to vote should soon be added to Indiana’s statehouse lawn.
Senators Sue Glick (R-LaGrange) and Jean Breaux (D-Indianapolis) served on a commission which planned last year’s celebration of the 19th Amendment’s centennial. Those events included a statehouse historical marker, but Glick says the Indiana Department of Administration, which oversees the statehouse grounds, rejected plans to put the marker there.
Commissioner of Administration Lesley Crane says the department fully supports the marker, but says it was a matter of procedure. Because the statehouse is a historic property, she says the department has typically required some type of formal legislative resolution for additions to it, not just from a government commission
GARRETT â DeKalb County is poised to receive its fifth official state historic marker approved by the Indiana Historical Bureau â honoring film star John Bowersox, who went by the stage name of John Bowers.
DeKalb County Historian John Bry has made it his mission to obtain more historic markers for the county during his tenure by applying to the state agency that reviews and approves topics of significance from Indiana history.
The historic marker honoring the life and work of Bowersox will be placed in Garrett. It originally was to be completed in 2020 but was suspended due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Bry now is seeking to wrap up the project.
