EVANSVILLE, Ind. The remains of more than 700 Native Americans have been returned to burial grounds in southwestern Indiana.
Indiana University completed repatriation of the remains to Angel Mounds State Historic Site from the school’s Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology, the Evansville Courier & Press reported Saturday.
In 2018, Indiana University researchers landed a $300,000 federal grant to preserve a treasure trove of artifacts excavated from the site. The school worked with several federally recognized tribal nations in the multi-year process to comply with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.

Indiana University and several federally recognized tribal nations have completed the repatriation of the Angel Mounds collection in compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.

Passed in 1990, NAGPRA mandates the return of Native American human remains and cultural items to tribal nations. EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - We have an update on that archaeological project we told you about at Angel Mounds.
Officials with Indiana University say they worked with several tribal nations to complete repatriation at the site.
They say the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, which was passed in 1990, mandates the return of Native American human remains and cultural items to tribal nations.
This repatriation includes the remains of over 700 individuals unearthed from the Angel Mounds National Historic Landmark and State Historic Site, starting in the 1930s.
