GUWAHATI: At least 20 vultures belonging to critically endangered species died in eastern Assam s Tinsukia. The incident was reported at Sadiya sub-division in upper Assam s Tinsukia district when the critically endangered vultures died from poisoning after consuming the carcasses of two cattle. Meanwhile, the forest officials rushed to the spot and found 20 vultures dead while eight vultures were still alive and were sent for treatment at Tinsukia.

Officials recovered cooked leopard meat, teeth, nails, skin and raw meat of the killed cat during the search. The incident was reported in the Munipara area which falls under the Mankulam Range of the forest department in Idukki district. Forest officials said this was the first instance of them witnessing such an incident. While the officers initial assessment was that the snare was put up to net wild boars and the leopard might have been trapped in the snare accidently. The accused, however, told officials that it was intentional- they set up the trap to catch the leopard. It

Mankulam DFO Suhaib said the incident occurred on Wednesday morning. The accused are Mankulam residents Vinod P.K., 45; V.P. Kuriakose, 74; C.S. Binu, 50; Sali Kunjappan, 54; and Vincent, 50. They had set a trap in a private land near the forest at Munipara, Mankulam. The male leopard, around 6 years old, was trapped on Wednesday morning. They took the animal to Vinod’s house, killed it, and cooked the meat, Mr. Suhaib said. The teeth and skin were found inside the house. “We arrested them following a tip-off,” he said.

Tinsukia: At least 23 vultures belonging to critically endangered species died in eastern Assam s Tinsukia. The incident was reported at Dhola in Assam s Tinsukia district when the critically endangered vultures died from poisoning after consuming the carcasses of two cattle. Meanwhile, forest officials have rescued 12 vultures in a critical condition and currently under treatment. The dead vultures were sent for post mortem later. Earlier in march 2019, 37 vultures belonging to three endangered species died in Assam s Sivasagar district after feeding on pesticide-laced cattle carcass.
