MADEIRA BEACH â In three weeks, the 2021 hurricane season will begin.
That reality is a source of dread for many people who live on the barrier islands along the Gulf of Mexico â and particularly so for Madeira Beach residents Grace Ariss and Eric Cabrera and their families.
For them, it seems like just yesterday that Tropical Storm Eta snuck up on Pinellas County beaches with up to 6 feet of storm surge to flood and severely damage hundreds of homes.
Seven months ago, Eta forced both families into temporary housing, and they are still unable to return to their homes.
âThere are still so many people still suffering here,â says Ariss. âWe are lucky that we could afford to rebuild, but not all people can do that.â

Another manta ray spotted in Bay Area
Sarasota police captured video of a giant manta ray near New Pass. It s at least the third sighing of a manta ray within a month.
SARASOTA, Fla. - There has been another giant manta ray sighting in the Tampa Bay area.
The large manta ray was spotted by the Sarasota Police Department s marine unit over the weekend. The massive marine animal was seen swimming around the patrol boat just north of New Pass on the Gulf of Mexico side.
INDIAN ROCKS BEACH â Residents dissatisfied with proposed parking rules thanked city commissioners for proposing fixes at the commissionâs April 13 regular meeting. The commission has struggled to write parking rules for more than a year.
âOver the past couple of months, youâve listened to homeowners and I compliment you for that,â said Mark Bodine, manager of Cameron Cove Resort. He worries that vacation rental owners on his property wonât have sufficient parking under the rules.
According to City Attorney Randy D. Mora, he and City Manager Gregg Mims came up with the new amendments after hearing complaints from residents. The city has struggled to streamline the parking permit process; it now assigns 1,100 permits to fewer than 75 parking spaces.
