West Bengal and Odisha evacuated more than two million people as a powerful cyclonic storm, Yaas, hit the east coast on Wednesday, causing extensive damage at a time when India is battling the world’s worst outbreak of Covid-19. Earlier classified as a “very severe cyclonic” storm, Yaas weakened into a “severe cyclonic storm” by afternoon after pounding the beach towns in north Odisha and neighbouring West Bengal with wind speeds of 130-145 kmph. Yaas hit the coast north of Dhamra in Odisha s Bhadrak district, 50 km south of Balasore district, around 9 am. The landfall process was over around 1.30 pm. Basics Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) may be defined as the capture, use, and secure storage of carbon that would otherwise be emitted into or remain in the atmosphere. The rationale for carbon capture and storage is to enable the use of fossil fuels while reducing the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, and thereby, mitigating global climate change. The storage period for CO2 exceeds the estimated peak periods of fossil fuel exploitation, so that if CO2 re-emerges into the atmosphere, it will occur after the predicted peak in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Removing CO2 from the atmosphere by increasing its uptake in soils and vegetation (e.g., afforestation) or in the ocean (e.g., iron fertilization), is also a form of carbon sequestration through natural sinks.

Second Big Cyclone in 10 Days Set to Worsen India s Virus Misery

Pratik Parija and Debjit Chakraborty, Bloomberg News (Bloomberg) A powerful cyclone is set to slam into India on Wednesday, the second in less than two weeks, with authorities gearing up for relief operations at a time when the nation is facing the world’s worst outbreak of Covid-19. Cyclone Yaas, equivalent to a category 3 hurricane, will cause heavy rains in the eastern states of West Bengal and Odisha, with wind speeds as high as 185 kilometers (115 miles) per hour, according to the India Meteorological Department. Sea levels may increase 4 meters above regular tides and inundate low-lying areas, it said. The latest storm follows a severe cyclone that hit the west coast last week the worst in over two decades in the western state of Gujarat killing dozens after a barge sank in the sea. The eastern region was hit by a cyclone in May 2020 with similar wind speeds, while another one in 2019 prompted authorities to evacuate millions of people.
