African American Youth Seek Tech Opportunities

Lack of exposure to education, training and competitive job opportunities are main factors behind the low numbers of African-Americans in the technology industry. InnoPower, Rooted School, The Indianapolis Recorder and Eleven Fifty Academy aim to widen the door for more diversity in tech. Mentorship and role models are provided throughout the program, which is geared for youth in the 46218 zip code area of Indianapolis. Emil Ekiyor is the CEO and Founder of InnoPower. He spoke with WFYI’s Terri Dee about the objectives of the partnership and the work ahead to help more African American youth to pursue careers in technology:

Under Fire: Journalists pressured by weight of changing industry

First published December 24, 2020 in TheStatehouseFile.com Greg Weaver still doesn’t know if he made the right decision to retire early from journalism. Last year, Weaver, who is in his late-50s, ended his more than 30-year-long career in journalism when he accepted an early retirement buyout from  The Indianapolis Star, a newspaper he worked for since the 90s.  It was a tough decision, he said, but he felt like this job would not see him through to his actual retirement. “I went through 10 rounds of layoffs in 10 years, so every year the staff got smaller. Every year, you started to wonder whether your number was up,” Weaver said.
