The mass-vaccination site at IMS is the first of four scheduled in Indiana in what the governor said a major boost to battle the coronavirus pandemic.
U.S. Rep. Andre Carson, a Democrat from Indianapolis, was among people who got their shots. “This vaccination is safe and effective, and I want to encourage every Hoosier to take it when it’s available to you.”
State Rep. Robin Shackleford, a Democrat from Indianapolis who is chair of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus, said, “I know there (are) concerns about how quickly the vaccine came about, our history when it comes to getting vaccinations, and feeling like guinea pigs. But, I want you to ensure sure that we feel this vaccine is safe. We wouldn’t be out here unless we thought it was safe.”
From there, they’ll wait the recommended 15 minutes in a parking lot nearby.
If any part of the day feels overwhelming, just look for something familiar, said Mike Bates, IMS director of safety and security. “You’ll see the Yellow Shirts (security personnel) out here which is kind of common sight out here.”
He said members of the National Guard, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan and Speedway police departments, and staffers from the Marion County Public Health Department will pitch in.
“They’re there to help with the traffic portion of it, to help get people checked in and direct people in the right direction, but it is a really good setup with two lanes and multiple garages being utilized,” Bates said.

The Winter Green Igloo dining experience is the latest addition to the property’s ways of inviting people into to eat while maintaining social distance of 6 feet during the coronavirus pandemic. It’s all happening at Prime 47 Carmel.
Clay Terrace General Manager Jennifer Jones said the goal was to give people a unique, family or friends experience. One once they saw some other property groups doing it, they had to give it a try. The igloos can heat up 30 degrees warmer than the outdoor temperature.
