New attorney scores big in first trial
A Marion County jury s award of $20 million in a personal injury case is notable enough, but it s really impressive when you consider the opening statement and closing argument on damages were delivered by an attorney with a law license issued five weeks earlier.
The plaintiffs in the case against Indianapolis Power & Light Co. were Wayne and Amy Simmons. Wayne Simmons, 46, worked as a union carpenter until March 26, 2014, when he was shocked by thousands of volts of electricity on IPL s Petersburg Power Plant, according to the Indiana Lawyer. He has been unable to work and under medical care and pain management since that time. In mediation, attorneys for IPL had offered $50,000.

Hoosiers are facing a tough winter. The COVID-19 pandemic is raging, with the state hovering near recent highs for cases and hospitalizations. The economic fallout from the pandemic also persists.
Small businesses are struggling to stay open and unemployment rates remain high. The long-awaited relief from Congress will help, but people throughout the state are having a tough time making ends meet.
For many Hoosiers, material hardship makes it impossible to afford critical energy services, such as electricity to keep their lights on and natural gas to keep their homes warm.

NREMC, a rural utility cooperative in Indiana, has just announced that it is deploying 108MWh of battery storage in a five-year project with energy storage technology and solutions provider FlexGen.
NREMC - Northeastern Rural Electric Membership Corporation - said that the full 108MWh of projects that it is partnering with FlexGen for will help reduce overall grid demand during peak times and lower consumers’ electricity rates while also providing backup power to some of its networks when weather or other events cause disruptions. The energy storage systems are projected to save consumers over US$35 million over 20 years, NREMC claimed.
