A back and forth game late turned Highland’s way in the final frame Tuesday as the Huskies came from behind to beat Hillcrest Academy 5-2, in a Southeast Iowa Superconference baseball contest in Kalona. Pitching and defense controlled the game early on, with Highland finally breaking through for a single run in the fourth. With runners on the corners, Bryce Thompson got in a rundown between first and second, allowing Tyler Thompson to scamper home and give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. That advantage stood until the bottom of the sixth when Hillcrest got a pair on a swinging bunt from Josiah Beachy and an errant throw by the Huskies. In the seventh, the Ravens were unable to close the door on a 2-1 win. Highland started the inning with a Logan Bonebrake double. Washington and WMU Boys Win Team Titles at Ekstrand

One of the biggest Southeast Iowa track meets of the year saw a few area track teams bring home a title last night at the Ekstrand Relays in Wayland. The Washington boys claimed their first team title of the year by winning the A division with 177 points and running away from second place Mediapolis with 112. The throwing events is where the Demons feasted with Brayden Hartman winning the shot put (49’11’’) and Reece Mayer took home the discus crown with a personal best throw of 149’11 while fellow senior Kael Adam was second (133’3’’). Mayer tells KCII Sports everything was clicking for him. “I felt strong in warmups, had the wind at my back, and it really carried over to my first throw. Getting first place today is helping my confidence as we get set for conference and districts. Columbus Boys Claim Title, Lead Area Teams at Pankoke Relays

For the first time since 2017, the Columbus Community boys enjoyed a victory lap around the track on Thursday when they won the Pankoke Relays at Winfield-Mt. Union. The Wildcats recorded 102 points on the evening to best second place New London with 96. A total of 17 Wildcats contributed to the scoring including two champions in Triston Miller with the 110m hurdles (16.98) and Mason Hodges in the discus (138’3’’). Runner-up events included 3200m run for Freddy Vergara (10:41), Kaden Amigon for long jump (19’2.5’’), and the 4x800m relay (9:32). Wildcat Head Coach Scott Dennler was ecstatic for his team to get their first crown in four years. “They took their victory lap and they were so happy. They have finished second three times, so to get over the hump and win was awesome. I was really happy for everyone especially our seniors, who have been grinding for six years. It was great to see.”
