Saugus Police: Malden shoplifter arrested after hiding on roof

A Malden man was arrested on a shoplifting charge after allegedly stealing a jacket from Macy’s and climbing on top of a roof to try to evade police.
On Jan. 25 a little before 6:30 p.m., Saugus Police received a 911 call from Macy’s loss prevention reporting a male shoplifter fled the store with a jacket.
Responding officers spotted the suspect, Joseph D. Spinney, 34, of 26 Bainbridge St., Malden, on Bufford Street.
Saugus Police Chief Michael Ricciardelli said Spinney took off running and climbed a ladder to reach the roof of a Bufford Street home.

At 6:04 a.m. a caller reported a suspicious male parked in a white sedan on Hesper Street. Officers reported nothing suspicious.
At 12:21 p.m. a caller reported a motor vehicle accident with injury on Main Street by the VFW. An ambulance transported a patient to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.
At 12:56 p.m. Macy’s loss prevention reported a shoplifting. A complaint will be submitted.
At 1:55 p.m. multiple 911 callers reported a fight in progress at Lowe’s and a male had a knife. Officers reported the male fled in a black Nissan. The incident occurred in Melrose and the Melrose Police Department will handle the call.
