This paper offers expert insight and analysis on mixed migration trends that have emerged over the course of 2020 in North and West Africa, grounded in existing literature and MMC’s unique primary data on people on the move. The aim of this paper is to raise awareness and strengthen policymakers’ understanding of the challenges and risks refugees and migrants are facing since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in North and West Africa, as well as to promote policies and debate based on data, with the voices and human rights of refugees and migrants at the center.
GIS, NIS meet to discuss gender issues ahead of Women’s Day celebration
Ahead of the March 8, 2021 Women’s Day celebration, the Gender Unit of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) is hosting its counterpart, the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) to deliberate on the progress made in developing gender strategies for their respective countries.
This year’s celebration, which is hinged on the theme: “Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a Covid-19 World,” is to accelerate the action towards gender parity.
Therefore, the purpose of bringing the two countries together is to provide a unique opportunity for them to share their experiences on the process, scope and focus of their respective gender strategies.
Policymakers, experts for bolstering protections of migrant workers

DHAKA, Feb 20, 2021 (BSS) – Policymakers, experts and representatives from national and international organizations today put emphasis on strengthening engagement of Trade Unions and Civil Society Organizations in migration sector of Bangladesh to bolster protections of migrant workers at home and abroad.
They made the remarks while speaking at “National Consultation on Migration and Development: Trade Unions and Civil Society Organization’s Platform,” organised by WARBE Development Foundation with support of Solidarity Centre Bangladesh.
Speaking as the chief guest, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour and Employment Ministry Mujibul Haque Chunnu, MP, said migrant workers have been facing various problems at home and abroad.

The number of refugees heading to Europe will increase this year due to the repercussions of the coronavirus pandemic, the Director-General of the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), Michael Spindelegger, said on Monday.
Handelsblatt newspaper quoted Spindelegger as saying that the availability of vaccines and health care in Europe and the global economic crisis caused by the pandemic is expected to increase immigration levels.
