Launch Tourism Booms As Space Coast Contemplates Post-Covid Comeback - Central Florida News - Intersection

Photo: NASA With the pandemic receding, cruises are looking to set sail this summer and people are heading back to the beaches. For the Space Coast, it’s a sign that Florida is becoming a travel destination once again. WMFE’s Brendan Byrne spoke with Peter Cranis, executive director at the Space Coast Office of Tourism, about space tourism, cruise lines and how COVID-19 has impacted Florida’s tourism industry.  Cranis says the pandemic was difficult for hotels, restaurants, and retail. He adds that some businesses were fortunate to weather the pandemic but others were not as lucky. His calculated that Brevard County lost $262 million in tourism and visitor spending.

Largest Carnival Cruise Line ship, Mardi Gras, arrives at Port Canaveral

Friday morning s arrival of Carnival Cruise Line s Mardi Gras to Port Canaveral was a symbolic event, signaling to many that cruising will soon be back, after the U.S. cruise industry has been idled since March 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The new Carnival ship still awaiting its first paying passenger sailed into Port Canaveral shortly after sunrise, joined shortly afterward by two other Carnival ships, the Freedom and the Liberty. Crowds of spectators lined the shore at Jetty Park and the port s Cove area to welcome the ships. Some onlookers arrived at Jetty Park as early as 4 a.m., and the  line of vehicles at the entrance gate increased to 100 vehicles by 4:30 a.m., as people waited for Jetty Park to open.
